A new school funding reform bill is scheduled for a hearing Wednesday in the state Senate Education Committee. Senate Bill 2288 provides a new, permanent revenue source for schools and property tax relief for homeowners. This bill is a great start towards a comprehensive solution to Illinois’ school quality and funding crises, and this Senate hearing is an important first step in that process.

The bill to limit PE waivers was passed last spring, and the ISBE has the responsibility to write the rules to implement the bill. Unfortunately, the rules the ISBE is proposing will “wipe the slate clean” for every school district in the state, even those with long-standing waivers, and will allow everyone to start with a possible six years more (if renewed the maximum two times).
The public has until Dec. 24th to write in with their public comments. We need your help in sending public comments to several people so that we can get the rules changed. If the ISBE and the legislators on the list do not get a lot of letters, we will be stuck with the proposed rules. Would you like to give the schoolchildren of Illinois a great Christmas present? Can you afford the $1.64 it will cost to send four letters? Can you take time to promote a positive change for the future? I totally understand how difficult it is to find a free minute this time of the year, but I hope that you will say yes.
This is what we need you to do:
Read the attached sample letter and print it out or modify it in your own words.
Letter to ISBE and JCAR
Print and sign 4 copies. Include your address.
Address one envelope to Ms. Sally Vogl, ISBE, 100 N. First St., Springfield, 62777
Address one envelope to Sen. Maggie Crotty of the JCAR committee (see pdf attachment)
Address one envelope to Rep. Brent Hassert of the JCAR committee (see pdf)
Choose one more member of the JCAR committee and address one more envelope (see pdf)
Put a signed letter in each envelope and mail as soon as possible.
