A project of NASPE Past Presidents’ Circle
Do you know of a K-12 physical education teacher or school sport coach from the Midwest AHPERD District (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, or Wisconsin) who has gone the extra mile to support youth? The Past Presidents’ Circle of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) plans on recognizing such an individual with the first NASPE Unsung Hero Award at our AAHPERD National Convention in Indianapolis, IN. In appreciation for this individual’s contributions, he or she will be invited to attend the AAHPERD National Convention as a special guest of NASPE Past Presidents. The deadline for nominations is December 15, 2009.
To be considered for this recognition, the individual:
- Must teach physical education, coach a school sport, or conduct a program that makes a significant difference in the lives of disadvantaged or at-risk youth.
- Must teach, coach, or work with a not-for-profit program or project that benefits youth (K-12) and is exemplary in quality.
- Membership is not required
To apply:
- A letter of nomination from a principal, supervisor, or other person who is familiar with this person’s exemplary contributions to youth should be forwarded to the address below. The letter must provide the nominee’s name, a description of the program, and an explanation of the nominee’s contributions to disadvantaged or at-risk youth. The nominee’s e-mail address and phone number should also be included.
- The nominator should provide two to three names of people familiar with the program, along with a phone number and e-mail or postal mailing address for each. These individuals will be contacted by a NASPE Past President and asked to respond to questions about this person and his/her service to youth.

- The Unsung Hero recipient will be notified by January 15, 2010 and arrangements will be made so he/she can attend the AAHPERD National Convention in Indianapolis, IN from March 16-20, 2010.
- To receive the award, the individual must agree to attend the AAHPERD National Convention.
The person selected for this award will receive the following:
- NASPE/AAHPERD membership for 1 year (if not a current member)
- Registration for the AAHPERD National Convention (http://www.aahperd.org/whatwedo/convention/)
- Travel to and from the individual’s home town to Indianapolis
- Hotel accommodations for up to 5 nights
- $100 total stipend toward meals
- The opportunity to spend time with NASPE past presidents and attend functions and sessions at the convention
- Invitation to and recognition at the Celebration of Professional Excellence
- Two tickets to the NASPE Hall of Fame Banquet where the recipient will be introduced
- Registration for one NASPE PIPEline or Physical Best workshop during the convention
The National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) is a non-profit professional membership association that sets the standard for practice in physical education and sport. Members include: K-12 physical education teachers, coaches, athletic directors, athletic trainers, sport management professionals, researchers, and college/university faculty. The mission of NASPE is to enhance knowledge, improve professional practice, and increase support for high quality physical education, sport and physical activity programs. It is the largest of the five national associations that make the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (AAHPERD).
